The Complaint That’s Often Misdirected
‘My internet is slow’ is one of the most frequently expressed home technology complaints and one of the most frequently misdirected. The ISP gets called, a technician comes out, the ISP connection tests fine, and the slow experience continues — because the problem was never with the ISP connection itself. The path from the internet to your device involves several links: the ISP connection at the entry point, the modem, the router, the Wi-Fi signal between router and device, and the device’s own network hardware. Any of these can be the bottleneck, and the ISP’s line test only verifies the first one.
A systematic diagnosis that takes 20–30 minutes identifies where the slowdown actually is — which both saves the time of a technician visit when the problem is inside your home and builds the case for an ISP conversation when the problem genuinely is with their service.
The Baseline Test: What Speed Are You Actually Getting?
Before anything else, establish what speed you’re actually getting versus what you’re paying for. Run a speed test (Speedtest.net or Fast.com) on a device that’s connected via Ethernet cable directly to the modem or router — not over Wi-Fi. The Ethernet connection eliminates Wi-Fi as a variable and tests the raw capability of your connection before any wireless degradation.
If the Ethernet speed test shows speeds close to your subscribed plan, the ISP’s connection is working correctly. The problem is somewhere between the router and your devices. If the Ethernet speed test shows significantly less than your subscribed speed, the ISP connection, modem, or their junction is the problem. These two outcomes lead to completely different diagnostic paths.
Wi-Fi: Where Most Home Internet Slowdowns Actually Live
Wi-Fi signal strength degrades with distance, through walls and floors, and due to interference from other wireless devices operating on the same or adjacent frequencies. The Wi-Fi experience in a room two walls and a floor from your router may be dramatically worse than the Ethernet speed that proves your connection is fine. This is the most common cause of the ‘my internet is slow’ experience in multi-story homes or homes with routers in one corner.
Run the same speed test on the affected device over Wi-Fi and compare it to the Ethernet baseline. A large discrepancy (Ethernet: 300 Mbps, Wi-Fi: 30 Mbps) points to Wi-Fi as the problem. Solutions in order of effort: move the router to a more central location, switch the affected device to the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band if it’s currently on 2.4 GHz (or vice versa, depending on distance — 5 GHz is faster at shorter range, 2.4 GHz penetrates walls better at longer range), add a Wi-Fi extender or mesh network node in the problematic area.
Old Hardware: The Router That’s Become the Bottleneck
A router purchased in 2018 or earlier may be the most capable hardware available then but is now potentially limiting speeds that your ISP is delivering. Wi-Fi standards have improved significantly: Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) routers have lower peak throughput and less efficient multi-device handling than Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) or Wi-Fi 6E routers. A household with multiple simultaneous users on streaming, gaming, and video calls may be experiencing the congestion that older Wi-Fi standards handle less efficiently.
Router CPU and memory also matter for the routing function itself: an old router processing many simultaneous connections with limited RAM and an underpowered processor may be the bottleneck for a household with 15–20 connected devices, even if the Wi-Fi signal is strong. Running a router past its effective lifespan (generally 5–7 years for quality consumer routers) is a common source of performance degradation that appears as ‘internet’ slowness.
Network Congestion: When It’s Genuinely the ISP
If Ethernet tests show speeds well below your subscribed plan consistently, particularly at peak hours (evenings, weekends) rather than at off-peak times (early morning), the problem may be ISP network congestion in your area. Cable internet services deliver ‘up to’ speeds that assume not all subscribers are using their maximum bandwidth simultaneously — when the neighborhood is home from work and streaming simultaneously, available bandwidth per subscriber may be lower than the plan’s headline speed.
Document your speed test results at different times of day over several days. If speeds are consistently lower than plan during peak hours and approach plan speed at off-peak times, you have documented evidence of ISP congestion that supports a service call or plan complaint. ISPs take documented time-correlated speed complaints more seriously than anecdotal ‘it feels slow’ conversations, and in some cases, they’ll adjust your plan or credit your account for a documented service shortfall.
