Smartphone Camera Settings Most People Never Use: A Practical Guide

The Camera You’re Using at 20% of Its Capability

Modern smartphone cameras — particularly in the mid-range and flagship tiers — have significant capabilities beyond the auto mode that most people use for most photos. The automatic mode is genuinely excellent now: computational photography, scene recognition, and real-time HDR processing make auto mode better at producing acceptable photos across a wide range of conditions than any manual setting a casual photographer would apply. But ‘acceptable in most conditions’ is not the ceiling of what the camera can do.

The settings and modes that unlock the camera’s actual capability aren’t hidden or complicated — they’re available in every camera app, most of them in the main interface rather than buried in menus. The barrier is knowing what they do and when using them produces a better result than letting auto handle it.

Pro/Manual Mode: When and Why to Use It

Most Android flagship cameras and many mid-range cameras include a Pro or Manual mode that provides direct control over ISO, shutter speed, white balance, and focus. The scenarios where manual control produces noticeably better results than auto: night photography where auto mode’s noise reduction over-softens detail (manual allows lower ISO with longer shutter speed on a tripod or stable surface), portraits in mixed lighting where auto white balance shifts color in ways manual white balance corrects, and action photography where locking shutter speed prevents motion blur that auto mode’s slow-shutter compromise creates.

The iPhone equivalent is the Camera app’s manual exposure controls (the slider that appears after tapping to focus) and the dedicated ProRes video format on Pro models. Most iPhone users capture more control through a third-party app (Halide, Moment) than through the built-in Camera app.

Night Mode and When to Override It

Computational night mode (Google Night Sight, Apple Night mode, Samsung Expert RAW night mode) works by taking multiple rapid exposures and combining them to produce a brighter, lower-noise image than any single exposure the camera would take. The results are impressive for relatively static scenes: a dark street, a dimly lit restaurant, a landscape under a dark sky.

The failure mode of automatic night mode is with moving subjects — people, pets, vehicles. The multi-exposure combination that reduces noise also causes motion blur or ghosting in subjects that moved between exposures. For night photos where people or movement are the subject, reducing the night mode’s frame count (some cameras allow this) or disabling it entirely and accepting a noisier but sharper image often produces better results. RAW Capture: Who It’s For and What It Requires

RAW image capture saves the raw sensor data before the camera’s processing algorithms are applied, rather than saving a processed JPEG. RAW files are larger (10–30 MB vs. 2–5 MB for a JPEG), require processing software to view and edit, and produce images that look flat and unprocessed straight out of camera. What they provide is processing latitude: the ability to recover highlight and shadow detail, adjust white balance without quality loss, and make edits that would degrade a JPEG that were already processed by the camera.

RAW is for photographers who edit their images rather than sharing directly from the camera roll. If you regularly edit photos in Lightroom Mobile, Snapseed, or similar apps and then share, RAW capture gives you better raw material to work with. If you take photos and share them directly, RAW provides no benefit — the JPEG your phone produces with its computational photography stack is the processed result, and RAW just gives you unprocessed data that looks worse until you process it yourself.

Grid, Histogram, and Composition Aids

The rule-of-thirds grid overlay available in all smartphone camera apps helps with composition — placing the subject at the intersection points of the grid lines rather than dead center creates more dynamic compositions in most situations. The histogram (available in Pro modes on most Androids) shows the distribution of tones in the frame and helps identify when the exposure is clipping highlights (overexposed) or crushing shadows (underexposed) before you take the shot.

Level indicators (a horizon line that shows whether the camera is tilted) are available in most camera apps and save the frustration of consistently crooked horizon lines in landscape photos. These tools don’t require any technical knowledge to use — they’re overlays that provide real-time information about your composition and exposure, and taking two minutes to turn them on in your camera settings improves the percentage of good photos with no other change.
